The client’s brief for this project was simple; devise a commercially viable apartment building with all units selling at entry level price point; the base of the new apartment market as the Gold Coast re-emerged out of the GFC.
Metro 88’ 2-staged 60 apartments and 2 home office/commercial space over 7 storeys provides a contextually appropriate response that improves the urbanity of the Southport area. The project has acted as a catalyst for urban renewal in the otherwise long moribund environment of the northern end of Scarborough Street. We found that the local authority town planners have shared our excitement for this new typology, which has started a bit of a trend in the locality.
Metro 88 added tenant amenity at roof level and façade activity and a pocket park/public seating node to the street front visually connecting to the internal reception lounges and it sits comfortably within the amorphous fine grained, eclectic old environment. Conceived, designed, delivered and sold out during the GFC, this building was a major win for Southport and its economical and innovative design has helped mainly young buyers enter the competitive housing market.
